“Web mapping database” of water reuse applications – reuse projects and opportunities worldwide
Water scarcity and the need to preserve conventional water are the main drivers for wastewater reuse. Projects for treated wastewater reuse are flourishing worldwide, and sharing experiences and information is undeniably the key to successful implementation and sustainable systems.
Moving in that direction, Ecofilae has developed a web mapping database to gather data on past, present and future projects for treated wastewater reuse all over the world. A global market study lead by Ecofilae in 2013 showed that both public and private sectors are interested. Thanks to other peoples’ experience, our tool will help new investors to secure their projects by avoiding common mistakes and missteps.
The application is divided in three : Present and past projects / Opportunities / Key indicators. The first tool geo-localizes and describes present and past projects (pilot to full scale) while the second will allow to identify future reuse hotspots with high potential. The last tool will give you some key figures at country scale.
Present and past projects
The application has been under development since 2014 using data collected by Ecofilae since 2009. The beta version is now ready and the final version will be launched in 2016.
To pursue, Ecofilae is now looking for partnerships and public or private sponsors. We also encourage project stakeholders to participate in filling the database, which is free.

Present and past projects
Currently the database contains more than 100 geo-localized treated wastewater reuse projects . All ways of reusing water and all the business sectors involved are taken into account : the food industry, oil & gas sector, golf courses. The reuse chains are described using a set of specific criteria : source of water, treatment and disinfection technologies, final end use, volume of treated wastewater reused, etc.). Keywords searches are also available. The application enables users to quickly identify and locate projects about which they want details. TWWR project leaders can immediately identify similar projects and give feedbacks or ask for information.

Water reuse opportunities
Reusing treated wastewater creates added value in territories. The challenge for decision makers is to identify existing and future areas where wastewater reuse is both most needed and worth implementing. Projects can be carried out at different scales (district, region, country, or river basin). Ecofilae, IRSTEA and the Corsican Rural and Agricultural Development Office (ODARC) conducted a study to identify areas with the potential and the means to reuse domestic treated wastewater in Corsica. The resulting map was then used by ODARC to identify future reuse hotspots across the island.
Key indicators for water reuse
Ecofilae is also developing a complementary mapping tool to record key indicators according to region (country, catchment, community). Users will be able find indicators including statistics on how much treated wastewater is reused per year and per country, the area irrigated with raw and treated wastewater per year and per country, and so on.
